Saturday, 27 Aug 05, 7.30pm at Esplanade Concert Hall

The American composer Samuel Barber wrote Piano Concerto in 1962, and it won the Pulitzer Prize the following year. It is one of the most important of post-World War II concertos and rising to the challenge is Philippines-born pianist Albert Tiu, Assistant Professor of Piano at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music. Conductor Muhai Tang also leads the SSO in the popular favourites, Berlioz’s Roman Carnival Overture and scenes from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet.

Symphonic Treats: Bruckner’s Ninth Symphony

Friday, 2 Sep 05, 7.30pm at Esplanade Concert Hall

The SSO’s Principal Guest Conductor Okko Kamu returns to conduct a monumental work by one of classical music’s great symphonists, Anton Bruckner. Also joining the SSO this weekend is the young German violinist Maria-Elisabeth Lott, who first made headlines at the age of 12 when she recorded a best-selling CD playing Mozart’s own violin. She will perform one of the most popular of classical works, Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto.
