Great Classics: Samuel Barber’s Piano Concerto

The
American composer Samuel Barber wrote Piano
Concerto in 1962, and it won the Pulitzer Prize the
following year. It is one of the most important of post-World
War II concertos and rising to the challenge is Philippines-born
pianist Albert Tiu, Assistant Professor of Piano at the Yong
Siew Toh Conservatory of Music. Conductor Muhai Tang also leads
the SSO in the popular favourites, Berlioz’s Roman
Carnival Overture and scenes from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet.

The
SSO’s Principal Guest Conductor Okko Kamu returns to conduct a
monumental work by one of classical music’s great symphonists,
Anton Bruckner. Also joining the SSO this weekend is the young
German violinist Maria-Elisabeth Lott, who first made headlines
at the age of 12 when she recorded a best-selling CD playing
Mozart’s own violin. She will perform one of the most popular
of classical works, Mendelssohn’s Violin
Concerto.
