A Day Of Sporting Thrills

An electrifying carnival atmosphere descended upon Toa Payoh Stadium on Friday, 20 Nov 09, as about 800 participants turned up for the 2009 Public Service Sports Carnival which is aim at promoting a healthy lifestyle and camaraderie among officers working in the Public Service. Mr Peter Ho, Head of Civil Service and President of Civil Service Club, was the Guest-of-Honour at the event.

Amidst the robust cheering from the spectators, 15 teams from various ministries and statutory boards competed in two fun telematch games.  While the teams were fiercely competitive, there were also light-hearted moments and displays of camaraderie as participants tried to figure the best way to tackle the challenges in the telematches.  It was an event whereby the participants can let their hair down and realty have some fun!  Land Transport Authority eventually edged out the other teams to claim the telematch trophy. Mr Zeng Han Jun, its team captain, said it was a “fun and exciting experience”, and a good opportunity to interact with peers from other public service agencies. He hope that more of such “innovative games involving teamwork”  could be included in future Carnivals.

For the first time, about 400 participants took part in a fitness assessment walk. Despite the light drizzle, they sportingly completed five rounds around the stadium cinder track, a distance of 2 km. Their walking speed and personal data were then used to calculate their fitness level. The Toa Payoh Sports Hall nearby was also buzzing with sports activities as the final of the Public Service Basketball Tournament between Ministry of Education and Ministry of Defence followed by the final of the Volleyball Tournament between Ministry of Education and Ministry of Home Affairs were played. (Refer to separate reports.)

Before the prize giving ceremony, the crowd was treated to an exciting cheerleading performance by students from Temasek Polytechnic, who thrilled the crowd with their flips and free fall stunts. CSC would like to thank all the public officers for their support in making this year’s Public Service Sports Carnival an outstanding success.
