A Potter’s Voice

As members promenade on the second storey of Tessensohn Clubhouse on their way to experience Club life, many suddenly pause in front of our expressively built art spaces to spend moments lost in thought and admiration. The works of ceramic art, seeming to glow from within with their deep rich earthy glazes and air of superb quality, are radiant examples of one man’s creative vigour.

Local potter Lim Hua Choon is one of the most well known potters in  Singapore , whose journey to artist fulfillment began 16 long years ago  as a florist. He had the stroke of genius that his arrangements would be more appreciated if he could have creative control over the vases as well, but as his knowledge of pottery grew, so did his passion.

Since 1993, when he completed a sculpture course at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Hua Choon has extensively exhibited around the world. Appreciation for his work was found in Jiangxi ( China ), Tokoname ( Japan ), Johor Bahru Hyatt Regency, Cairo ( Egypt ) and of course Singapore , as he held exhibitions at least once a year from 1987 to 2005. The appeal of his work is universal and uplifting.

“Like many potters, my works were first driven by lifestyle pottery. I then experimented sculpting, something that I enjoy tremendously. Today, I am into a new phase – conceptual ceramics,” Hua Choon told us. Using every new piece to store his feelings and deeper meanings, he nurtures a wider and wider variation of shapes and sizes from the traditional forms of vases, plates and jars.

The pieces displayed at Tessensohn Clubhouse are splendid examples. Traditional teapots, tenderly made, are accompanied by perfectly formed cups and bonsai-like twigs as handles. His creations thrust their slender forms to light – alluring, mysterious and curvy with slim necks. Dramatic examples of his creative development are the large sculptures on display, with bases of stormy clay holding aloft striking thrusts and patterns of aged steel. Such range and confidence!

Lim Hua Choon’s collection of 20 pottery art pieces, perfect for any living space, is on display on the second floor of Tessensohn Clubhouse and the artworks are for sale.  Prices range from $300 to $1400, with a nice 15% discount for Club members.
